My 4 year old was counting money and repeatedly bringing it over to me to tell her how much she had, as kids do. She’s still at that number of coins means far more than the type of coins stage.
Anyway she produced an odd looking coin which turned out to be an American Quarter. About the size and colour of an old 10p piece but thinner. On the back it says “Live Free or Die” which it transpires is the motto of New Hampshire.
The full quote is “Live free or die: Death is not the worst of evils.” and is attributed to General John Stark.
In 1971 the New Hampshire State Legislature decreed that all license plates had to display the motto and for 6 years prosecuted motorists who failed to display it until a Jehovah Witness finally won the right not to display it as it was offensive to his religion.
So you had a motto proclaiming freedom that could get you arrested. Only in America.
And no, it wasn't a quote by John McClain ![]()
